Why Your Next House Battery Should Be Lithium

If you know a little bit about Lithium batteries, you probably have some misconceptions. They are expensive. They spontaneously catch on fire. They’re difficult to wire and temperamental to operate.

As with most technologies, what was true yesterday isn’t necessarily true today.

We’ll make a bold statement:

If your boat (or recreational vehicle) relies on house batteries when you’re away from shore power, we’re almost positive that once you understand the benefits of Lithium batteries, you’ll never consider lead acid batteries again.

The reasons aren’t just cost (over the long term, a lithium house bank will cost a fraction of AGM or traditional lead acid). You’ll never go back because of the total experience. If you own a lithium-powered tool you already know what we mean: the sheer amount of energy you can get from a small battery, the speed of charging, and the long life.

As with most new technologies, getting the most from them requires that you think differently. Don’t apply the old paradigms, because they will limit what you can accomplish with the new technology. With lead acid technology, most boaters accommodate to their limitations either by curtailing their use of energy while at anchor or succumbing to the need to run a generator for hours. Boats with properly installed lithium batteries don’t have to worry about either.

But don’t take our word for it. Let’s go through the facts, one by one.

Z

Fact#1

Lithium Ferrous Phosphate (LFP) batteries, when properly installed, are as safe or arguably safer than lead acid batteries. And we love them.

Z

Fact# 2

An LFP house battery with equivalent usable amp hours will cost about a third more than AGM, but will last up to ten times as long. Unless you are only going to keep your boat (or rec vehicle) a few years, you’re throwing money away by re-powering with lead acid technology.

Z

Fact# 3

A LFP battery has almost twice as much energy available to the user as lead acid with equivalent amp hour capacity.

Z

Fact# 4

An LFP battery can be fully charged in a fraction of the time it takes to charge lead acid chemistry. In practical terms, this can eliminate the need for a separate generator, because most engines can support a large enough alternator to do all the necessary charging.

Z

Fact# 5

An LFP battery has no voltage sag and no Peukert losses. Why is this important?

Z

Fact# 6

An LFP battery is a fraction of the weight of an equivalent lead acid battery, as well as much smaller. You will have the option, if you choose, to greatly expand your energy in the same space as your current batteries.

Z

Fact# 7

LFP batteries are significantly more stable than lead acid (which lose up to 10% of their charge per month). You can leave your boat (rec vehicle) unplugged for months without risking battery damage or discharge.
